Concrete leveling
Concrete Crack Sealing in Rockford, IL
Updated October 1, 2026
This is the cheapest thing on this site, and the one most likely to stop the next call. Nearly every void described on this site starts with water finding its way under a slab through an open joint, and a sealed joint is water that never gets there.
Cause
Why This One Settles
Every other service here fixes a slab that has already dropped. This is the one bought before that happens, which is also why almost nobody asks for it by name.
- Freeze-thaw cycling opens control joints and shrinkage cracks a little wider every winter, and an open joint is a straight path for water to the soil below.
- A crack under about a quarter inch wide is usually cosmetic on its own, but once it is a path for water it stops being only cosmetic.
- Sealant is flexible rather than rigid, so it moves with the slab through a freeze-thaw cycle instead of cracking out the way a rigid patch would.
- The driveway apron and the strip along a sidewalk are where this gets skipped most, and exactly where the next void on this site is already starting.
The underlying reason any of it moves here is the frost line. Rockford requires footings at 42 inches because the ground freezes that deep, and flatwork is poured well above it. Full explanation on why concrete sinks in Rockford.
The work
How This Job Runs
- Step 1
Clean the joint or crack out, removing loose material and old failed sealant.
- Step 2
Rout a shallow crack slightly wider where needed so the sealant has something to grip.
- Step 3
Apply a flexible polyurethane or silicone sealant in a continuous bead, tooled flush with the surface.
- Step 4
Let it cure per the product, typically a few hours to foot traffic.
When lifting is the wrong call
Where This Does Not Work
A joint with a visible step or lip between the two sides has already settled, and sealant alone will not fix that. That is a leveling job, with sealing done afterward so the newly closed gap does not just open again next winter.
Cost
What It Runs
Sourced from Angi's 2026 driveway repair cost data: filling minor cracks runs $0.50 to $3 per linear foot, and most residential jobs land at $100 to $300 once a contractor's trip minimum is included, rather than being itemized by the foot.
Full per-square-foot breakdown and the comparison against replacement is on the pricing page, and the method choice is covered on mudjacking versus foam.
